Huh. Okay then.
Since I had to pay for a whole month's subscription to find out whether the 'net service up here was fast enough to work on World of Warcraft, I decided to go ahead and upgrade all the way to Wrath of the Lich King (which took the past 3 days to do) so I could goof around with a Death Knight (specifically a Blood Elf DK named Willexia) for a while.
Rather surprised to find that my initial perception of it being too slow up here was, apparently, incorrect. Tearing through droves of enemies barely lags at all.
In hindsight, I was seeing how badly it lagged in Shattrath, which, now that I think about it, always caused rather significant lag for me anyway just because it's so blasted crowded.
May have to re-up for a few more months now...I'm rather liking this.
