The Pledge of Allegiance. I'm sure we've all heard about the fire it's come under lately, right? It seems everywhere you turn someone's bitching for or against the inclusion of those two little words near the end: "Under God". Now it's finally been dragged to the Supreme Court by an atheist from California named Michael Newdow because he doesn't want his daughter saying those words.
Okay, I'm not even gonna waste my time ranting on this one. The issues been beaten flatter than Dan Quayle's EEG readings. I'm just going to ask one simple question and then make a suggestion.
QUESTION:
People can get by gasping "Oh my god!" at something terrifying or disgusting and yelling "God dammit!" when they smash their thumb with a hammer, whether they're Christian, Jewish, Shinto, Wiccan, Atheist, or what have you. Where's the outcry for that?
SUGGESTION:
Leave it to the kids. While they ought to stand during the pledge out of respect for the country, let them decide how the words go. If they don't want to say it at all, let them stand in silence. If they want to omit the part about God, let 'em. If they want to say the whole thing, let 'em say the whole thing. Kids may not be the most mature beings on the earth (...neither are parents anymore, apparently...), but they're smart enough to know what they want. They're the ones the issue effects most, so it's only fair they get a say on the issue.
...That's it, by God. ;b
