The title says it all, really...had a nightmare last night that's been stuck in my mind all day, even up to right now.
It was an eyewitness account of what I consider the most memorable scene in Chrono Trigger...the destruction of the Kingdom of Zeal.
I'm not saying I had a dream of the cutscene from the game...it was more like I was right there as Lavos unleashed his wrath on the floating continent.
For the first few moments, everything is calm and peaceful...I'm standing in a garden under a tree, watching a lady and her daughter play, when suddenly the ground shakes. And again. And again. Within moment, is becomes clear that this isn't some sort of turbulance or earthquake or anything...no, it's obvious these are impacts.
What is causing the impacts becomes perfectly clear as I, and everyone else who has run outside, sees hundreds of large, glowing spikes fire off into the stratosphere...then the shock sets in as the ground shakes again, much more violently, just an instant before one of the spikes tears through the ground, impaling an old man and hoisting him up like a flag pole.
Then another bursts through...and another...they don't stop. People are running around everywhere, screaming in terror between the spikes bursting through the ground and the slowly-increasing list of the entire continent being knocked off balance. As the holes punched through the ground grow largers, entire sections of the outer rim break away and fall off through the sea of clouds below.
The ground heaves, cracks, and caves in multiple areas, with a large mound of stone thrusting up between the lady and child I had been watching just moments before. The girl rolls precariously close to the edge of a hole one of the spikes had made, scampering away in fear. Her mother runs to her to catch her.....just as they reach out to one another, another spike tears through, and both of them are gone in an instant.
Then, it finally happens....the moment where everyone who is still alive, and not paralyzed in fear, realizes that the entire kingdom is in freefall. In spite of its massive size and weight, it seems to be a slow, almost featherlike descent, but this provides us all no comfort.
Especially not when the listing begins to grow much worse, much faster. Within a moment that felt like an eternity, the once-floating land mass was on its side, sending many folks flying right off into the air, plunging to their doom alone instead of with everyone else.
It takes everything I have to hold on as the new angle of descent gives way to a greatly increased velocity, especially once the storm clouds are pierced and the winds howl around us even worse...yet somehow, in all that, I am able to turn my attention for a moment, JUST before striking water, to the great beast rising out of the ocean...the one responsible for the entire calamity. I stare Lavos right in its gargantuan, beak-shelled eye...
Just in time to wake up sweating bullets.
That's been playing through my head again and again all day...the image of the lady and her daughter being slaughtered was burned in especially hard.
