Sitting here watching Star Wars ep. IV: A New Hope, and it just got up to the scene where everyone, including the Death Star, arrives at Yavin IV for the climactic final battle...and one of the helmsmen aboard the ISS That's-No-Moon contacts Vader with the following:
"The Rebel Base is on a small moon on the far side (of the planet). We are now preparing to orbit the planet."
It just now occurred to me...
Why didn't they just shoot the planet?
They're the freakin' Empire. What's anyone gonna do to them for making another planet, as Zaphod Beeblebrox put it, do the big firecracker? Plus, they probably wouldn't have even had to fire a 2nd shot. The shrapnel/shockwave/etc. from Yavin going kerblooey would have probably done the trick.
*shrugs* What can I say, every time I watch the original trilogy, I find my brain working out ways the Empire could've done so much better. :/
