So, Friday I took my laptop in to a local tech specialist to see about getting the screen to stay lit and the trackpad working again.
The screen was about as bad as I'd figured: The inverter and the LCD had been burnt by an electrical surge and had to be replaced.
Where I go "Yikes!" at, though, is the cause of the trackpad issue, and apparently of the screen issues: The battery was undergoing a catastrophic failure, probably causing electrical issues and causing it to bulge up into where the trackpad is (hence why the damn buttons wouldn't work). In any case, though, his explanation of what it was doing basically amounted to the point that, had I waited another day to take it in to him, I'd probably have wound up with a lap full of battery acid.
I don't imagine that being particularly pleasant.
