The plumber got here early yesterday morning and got the problem fixed rather quickly. However, the smell from the garbage disposal that I'd been trying to deal with prior remained. Turns out the problem there was that there was stuff stuck in it due to me never running it...which I'd never done because I hadn't wired it up yet.
I hadn't done that because I'm afraid of getting electrocuted. It's the reason I was so worried about having to change my own car battery a few months back...a task I now no longer fear. So, after killing the power in the kitchen and unhooking the disposal, I set about what I thought was going to be a daunting task.
About 10 minutes later, the thing's wired up, re-plumbed, plugged in, running perfectly, and now more or less stink-free. No zaps, no tripped circuit breakers, no house fires.
Woot.
