xaq_the_aereonSo yeah, recently TSA had opted to sponsor the Iditarod, the annual dogsled race from Anchorage the Nome. Folks up here thought it was a good idea to spread word and maybe get some folks to try and get a job here, since a lot of our positions across the whole state are unfilled.
Then the head honchos down in DC get hit by a number of demands from the PETA pinheads to drop the sponsorship, calling the race (SURPRIIIISE!) inhumane to the dogs. Why? Because in the last 6 years, 20 dogs died during the course of the races, including 8 last year.
Let me run some figures by you folks real quick to explain just why this is such a load of bullshit.
Average number of participating mushers each year: 90.
Number of dogs per team: 16.
90 x 6 x 16 = 8640. Factoring in repeat competitors, that's about 7,500 dogs that have been involved, 20 of which died during the races.
Approx. mortality rate: 0.285714286 percent...as in less than one-third of ONE PERCENT of them. As in roughly one out of every THREE-HUNDRED FIFTY.
Because 1 out of 350 mushing dogs lost their lives during the Iditarod, whether it be to disease, animal attacks, accidents on the ice (including going through it), or, in the least common occurrence (not that they'd lead you to think anything other than the total opposite), basically being run to death....because of that, PETA calls this race inhumane.
Look at every animal shelter PETA runs across the country. Pick 350 animals in those shelters completely at random, and keep an eye on them for 2 weeks, the usual running time of the Iditarod.
If even one of those animals dies for any reason, PETA itself is inhumane. If a second one does, then they are even more inhumane than the mushers who devote immeasurable amounts of their lives to raising, training, and taking care of their dogs...dogs who, I might add, love doing this kind of stuff.
TL;DR STFU PETA; and Mr. Pistole? You should've stuck with the sponsorship.
