After playing A Link to the Past, Twilight Princess, and A Link Between Worlds, some people might wonder...which is the actual counterpart to Hyrule: The Dark World, the Twili Realm, or Lorule?
Well, we can rule the Dark World out straight off as it's stated to be Hyrule's Sacred Realm twisted to an evil form, so that leaves the Twili Realm and Lorule.
Here's the thing, though...I don't think there's just two sides to Hyrule's existence. If there's one thing the Legend of Zelda's lore has made abundantly clear, it's that everything important comes in 3s.
The 3 pieces of the Triforce: the Triforce of Power, the Triforce of Wisdom, and the Triforce of Courage.
The 3 bearers of the pieces throughout every generation: the King of Thieves, the Princess, and the Hero.
The 3 Sacred Relics needed to awaken the Master Sword.
The 3 paths the timeline split into in the wake of the events of Ocarina of Time, based on whether the Hero remains in the future, returns to the past, or falls in battle.
Hyrule, Lorule, and the Twili Realm...I think that, all in all, the three are counterparts to each other, somewhat like the segments of the Triforce...their leaders show the traits of each.
Zelda, bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, allows it to guide her actions and decisions throughout the series.
Hilda, the queen of Lorule, gives in to her desire for Power and seeks to claim the Triforce in order to save her world, even if it means sentencing Hyrule to extinction.
Midna, leader of the Twili, shows exceptional Courage when, even after being turned into an imp and having to go into a world where the light itself could kill her, seeks out a means of saving her world regardless of the risk to herself, even willing to risk being consumed by the power of the Fused Shadow and prioritizing getting Zelda to help Link over her own survival.
So yeah, I guess you could say that I don't view the world of the Legend of Zelda as a two-sided coin; more like a three-sided one.
...This was a much more profound train of thought when I was in the shower. o_O;
