Well, guess I was wrong about being gone...I am reporting live (although by the time you read this it will undoubtedly be a recording) from the Marriot Courtyard hotel in Arlington, a mere 200 feet from the Hyatt Regency where the convention is being held. And I have to say, while it's only been 3 hours, I am having a BLAST!
I mean, this hotel room's awesome enough..75 bucks for a weekend in a 2-room king-sized suite!? W00T^2!!
But anyway, on to the awesomeness that was my first Con experience in almost a year (some of you might recall my trip to Anime Central last March...or May...or whenever..).
First off, I just want to give a giant raspberry to
drewtiggy. Sure, he got to meet Megatokyo artist Fred "Piro"Gallagher at ACen, but not only did I get to meet him, but I also met a rather cute Tohya Miho cosplayer dressed in a somewhat familiar looking outfit she said she saw on the Oop Ack server...a piece of fanart that I sent! I asked her for a photo, as well as where she got the idea for the outfit from (hence how I found out, obviously , then pulled my lone companion to the Con out of my bag...my sketchpad, with that very drawing in it. Her reaction was a little...energetic.
My shoulder's STILL bruised from the glomping. ^^;;
After that, I spent a while running the first of my 3 cameras out of film on various cosplayers..a particular hobby of mine at Cons is to get pictures of people in cosplaying outfits when they don't expect it. My personal best tonight was when I asked a pair of gals dressed as Chobits' "Chii" and FFX-2's "Yuna" (in Songstress dressphere) to wait while I snapped a photo of someone dressed as Kingdom Hearts' "Sora"....then, the instant I snapped the shot, I wound it, whipped around, and snapped one of them, catching them completely off guard. ^^
However, I have yet to meet my current photo goal: Find someone cosplaying Squall from Final Fantasy 8 (who I'm doing a rather shoddy cosplay of m'self), as well as someone doing a kind of half-assed job of it (yet better than me) and photograph the three of us side by side. "The Evolution of Cosplay" you might say.
Anywho, on to other KC subjects...I caught a number of rather awesome AMVs made by numerous con-goers. There were songs by Evanescense, the Coors, Train, and various techno tracks put to video of clips from such anime as Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, Someday's Dreamers, Evangelion...but to me, the reward for the night HAS to go to a tie between two videos:
"Karaoke gone wrong", a song with no lyrics other than "la la la" with about 50 different anime clips in it,
and a Naruto clip of...of all things...THE MENTOS THEME! (complete with logo and thumbs-ups!)
However, tonight hasn't been COMPLETELY perfect...aside from the Miho-glomping that's turned my shoulder a nice shade of apricot, I also had a bit of a mishap involving this group playing emulated arcade games on a wall via a projector.
I kinda sat on the plug to their power strip, sending everything into a state of deadness.
If any of the guys who were playing or watching when that happened are reading this, I have to give you my sincerest apologies. Gomen nasai! *bows until his head bounces off the floor*
Anyway, that's it for tonight...I'll give you the details on day 2 tomorrow night. But for now....I'm headin' my happy ass back over to the convention! Bai! *puts fingers to his forehead and....fails to achieve Instant Transmission* ...oh well, guess I can walk...
UPDATE -- Later that night!:
Soon as I went back in I met up with GlomperMiho-chan again...repeat performance, refreshed bruise. Ahh well, I've had worse. Checked out the DDR scene (since the wall-projected "StepMedia" DDR-clone was drawing a HUGE amount of attention and as such left the real deal's lines surprsingly short)...I swear, it didn't seem like ANYONE knew how to play. I saw 6 people in a row bomb out ON THEIR FIRST TRACK! After the initial humiliation wore off, it was my turn to go.
And quickly found out their problem: F@%king pads were too big. You'd think your foot was hitting the back arrow or the right arrow, and instead it was landing dead center. Still, comparitively I made roadkill out of them. I mean, for starters, I passed all my songs, and on top of that averaging a B.
Then I came back here to crash...and crash I did. I got a harsh reminder that aside from the BBQ sandwich and ravioli I'd had before leaving the base for the weekend, I'd had SQUAT to eat. No sandwich, no ramen...I hadn't even had any freakin' POCKY yet! (Still haven't even SEEN any yet, actually..)
So this is where I'd like to give a HUGE shout-out to the guys at Cosplay.COM for dealing out free pizza. First they led me to this convention, now they've saved me from starvation. d^^b Deuces Up, guys! Arigato!
