[YOU MADE THAT PUN JUST FOR ELESA'S GYM?]
Yep.
The battle against the Sigilyph still had Omen reeling as his Trainer and the rest of the team made their way to the east end of town...only to run into N, the star of Team Plasma and self-proclaimed Pokemon Liberator.
The idea of being "liberated" sank in his stomach like a rock. Being with Rene, Onnamusha, and the others was the only thing that gave him any sense of peace anymore, and his friends made it clear they enjoyed being together with him and Rene as well...how could some human think taking that away from them was acceptable, let alone right?
His attempts to bring Rene over to his way of thinking fell on deaf ears; he and the rest of the team knew Rene loved being with them as much as they loved being with her. Disappointed, he battled her to give his underlings time to escape.
[NEEDLESS TO SAY, OUR LITTLE DEINO WAS NOT HAVING IT]
The fact that N led with a Sigilyph was fuel on the inferno at this point. Omen took over for Artorias and struck out at the bird with all his might...and for all his fury, Dragon Rage once again failed. The Sigilyph's Aerial Ace, conversely, struck true.
For the first time since their journey began, Omen fell.
Awakening at the Pokemon Center later brought no comfort. Not only had Artorias handled it in his stead, but had evolved to an Excadrill in the process. He'd been rash, he'd been useless, and he'd been taken out like a common Ratatta.
This was it, he thought. He'd failed, and now the misery that had been with him his whole existence was going to be snuffed out by a disinterested creator discarding a broken toy.
[IF ONLY HE KNEW YOU WERE SO MUCH MORE FORGIVING THAN THAT]
(Can you please stop ruining the mood?)
To his surprise, nothing bad came of this. Rene cheered him up and, alongside Artorias, put him to the forefront of the team for tackling Elesa's Gym.
The barrage of Emolgas and Blitzles' attacks brushed off him harmlessly, and even if attacking them induced paralysis, Rene wasted no time healing him right back up. She and the others cheered him and Artorias on as they plowed through effortlessly. He could feel their pride in his achievements...
Then it came time to take on Elesa herself, and Artorias was moved to the front. So was this it? Just a bit of pity from the unseen hand guiding Rene's actions? ...Apparently not, as he found himself back in the lead a moment later, taking on her first Emolga.
The anger wasn't there, the desire to destroy wasn't there...but he couldn't help but want to go full-throttle here. As a show of force against a worthy foe, and to achieve victory for his friends.
And when he unleashed Dragon Rage against the Emolga...it barely even fazed them.
Was the lack of a desire to destroy anymore the cause? Or were the opponents here simply strong enough to handle it? Either way, he kept at it, attacking with everything he had...and in that moment, he felt his power surge.
Not through rage, not through hatred, but through a simpler, realistic emotion: a desire to win. For himself, for Rene, for Onnamusha, and for the rest of the team.
[DRAGON RAGE -> DRAGON PULSE]
Another Emolga entered the field, and, with his mind and conscience clear for the first time he could recall, he struck. No devastation, no collateral damage, just a downed Emolga, almost ready to collapse.
The rush was exhilarating. He was no longer just tagging along, jumping in to protect his friends at the expense of others...he was battling, as a part of the team. Perhaps now he could walk the same path as his friends at long last...
Or, he realized, he could get smacked right in the gut with an Aerial Ace and nearly black out again. He watched on from within his Pokeball as Artorias finished the fight, but felt an odd sense of peace despite his blunder.
Perhaps now, his creation could finally start to show some purpose...
[GOOD JOB, OMEN ^_^]
Indeed. ^_^
