xaq_the_aereon: I caught it...now what? (Default)
Sheesh. Such a lively weekend and I can't even post to tell about it because my LJ program has died on me. (Ironically enough I'm using one called "Phoenix"...guess its ashes got scattered on the winds.)

Anyway, I went out to visit Anher and Stryck last weekend, despite the fact that Drewtiggy wasn't gonna be able to make it. I thought about staying here to save on the rental car, and then 2 things happened that made me change my mind.

1) I came to the realization that I was putting my wallet on a higher priority than my sanity. So, I figured if nothing else I'd just take the car for Friday and go down to the mall to shop and catch a movie.

2) Then the power went out at the barracks. That was it, I decided. Packed up and headed south on route 17.

For those of you familiar with the rural parts of eastern Virginia, you might know about a little town called Saluda. Well, I was driving through said down on Friday around, oh, 3:30ish, when disaster struck....I sneezed.

Said sneeze sent my right hand jerking down on the wheel. Anyone with driving knowledge knows that jerking the wheel to the right when in the right hand lane will land you off on the shoulder...which, in this case, it did. At this point I wasn't panicking. I eased the wheel back and let off the gas to ease myself back onto the road, so as to avoid spinning into a fishtail.

The car fishtailed anyway. For a brief moment I was looking directly at the left shoulder, then almost directly at the right shoulder, and then out of the corner of my left eye I caught a short wooden pole coming at the car. "Short" as in "shorter than the telephone pole 15 feet away from it."

That "short" pole was cut clear out of the ground in a way that would've made a lumberjack proud. Rental car was wrecked.

Thankfully I wasn't hurt. Got taken to a hospital for a checkup, and they found I was fine.

The Middlesex County Sheriff's department, however, was not so kind. I now have an August 2nd court summons for violation of Virginia State Law section 46.2-853: Failure to maintain control of vehicle. I'm gonna keep on trying to get this taken care of through the mail or over the phone, but for now it seems I might be stuck returning to Saluda.

And 2 days after my birthday nonetheless.

Geez life is grand sometimes...
