The other day, Sczer's (my desktop's) speakers started to flake out, producing white noise. Not sure what brought this on, but after having them unplugged for a day, they seemed to be okay...a little while ago, though, it started to come back strong, and with some very unusual company.
What do I mean by unusual? Well, apparently my speakers are doing a part-time job as radios now, because when I reached back to unplug them, I noticed the faint reception of a local religious radio broadcast.
To verify that it was that and not some ad on one of the sites I was on, I turned my radio on, cranked the tuner dial all the way down, and sure enough, my speakers were picking up 91.3 FM KSKA.
Apparently this isn't a new problem, though...Googled it and found that the problem might be having them sandwiched amongst a crapload of electronics. So, I'll just unhook 'em for a few days, let the build-up bleed out, then this weekend I'll try lacing the cables down into the cabinet section below and set them up there. A few inches of marble and wood ought to insulate them enough.
Beats my initial "solution" to the problem, at least: Buy a new set of speakers. Problem I ran into there was that the set I bought, which are a very nice 5-piece surround sound set, don't have the right connections to hook up to the computer. Oops.
They can, however, and will be hooked up to the TV this weekend, so it's not a total loss.
Still, what are the odds that one of the 3 radio stations up here would be able to do that? O_o;

Date: 11/18/11 16:22 (UTC)Given how... incredible it seems to me that the theory of radio antennae works at all - vibrating atoms up and down at just the right frequency - and how surrounded we are with every signal, I'm surprised it doesn't happen to electronics absolutely everywhere. I recall someone submitted a recording of one to FA with the honest belief that it was a ghost living in her microphone.
