Well, the good news is that Dad's surgery went without a hitch, and once he's off the "Get Better Faster" Equipment they hooked him up to, he should be good as new.

The arm sling part of the GBFE was not a surprise. The IV-drip ball supplying localized anesthetic, however, was a bit unexpected....the real dose of WTFery here, however, is the device they hooked him up to in order to keep his shoulder cold and soothed.

It is literally an ice chest with a motorized pump and hose to circulate cold water up and around it. I am not kidding, we could honest-to-God be using the device to cool and relax his shoulder to keep a 12-pack of Coor's nice and fresh. (Fortunately, neither of us drinks, so that won't be happening).

Still, he's taking it all in stride rather nicely...looking forward to seeing how airport security deals with it when we go home. XD

So long as you have the proper documentation you;ll be fine, at least logically. Of course, the TSA doesn't operate that way all the time as shown in a quote from a former FBI agent here:

Once, when approaching screening for a flight on official FBI business, I showed my badge as I had done for decades in order to bypass screening. (You can be envious, but remember, I was one less person in line.) I was asked for my form which showed that I was armed. I was unarmed on this flight because my ultimate destination was a foreign country. I was told, "Then you have to be screened." This logic startled me, so I asked, "If I tell you I have a high-powered weapon, you will let me bypass screening, but if I tell you I'm unarmed, then I have to be screened?" The answer? "Yes. Exactly."

Of course, ymmv.

My mileage definitely varies on that, due to understanding the logic behind that bit of apparent nonsense.

I do like how his story apparently gives the idea that LEOs can fly armed whenever they feel like it, though. It's a load of crap, but an amusing load of crap.

In any case, though...while I've been out of this particular job for a month now, I think I remember how to get him through security with that stuff. :b I'm pretty sure we'll be checking the ice chest anyway; it has to be plugged in to operate, and when has a 737 Combi had plugs available to the passengers?

I didn't get the impression that a LEO could fly armed whenever they wished. What it looked like to me is that when the officer in question was headed somewhere and needed to be armed he would show his badge and the required form.

I'm glad to hear your dad's okay... hope things go well for both of you, yeah?

Well, it's going rather nicely for him (getting to lounge around all day and take a few weeks off work to heal up), and it's going okay for me as well (got some shopping in, including a Fat Pack of the last 3 Magic: the Gathering sets from Wayne's World, probably my favorite store in this whole state), but the fact that I'm having to be the responsible care-giving one on this whole trip is definitely a new experience for me.
