So earlier today, I went ahead and looked for a set of pots and pans so that I could eventually get to cooking my own food rather than eating out whenever the thought of a bologna/ham sandwich or cereal wasn't appealing.
I guess living up in Nome for 4 years skewed my appraisal of costs, however, because wow. $150 for a 12-piece set was still outside what I wanted to spend, but the same thing would easily be $250 back home.
Regardless, I got myself a pot and strainer for about $25 total, then decided as long as I'm getting those, might as well get some stuff to make alongside my experiment with the George Foreman grill and pork chops tonight, so I went to the pasta aisle...good lord was I in for a surprise.
1 box of Fred Meyer brand macaroni: $1.75
1/6 of a box = about enough for 1 night's meal.
4 boxes, or 24 meals = $6, which is about what I'd budgeted myself on meals per diem.
In other words, for the price of what I've been paying a day to eat, I could stuff myself full of macaroni for nearly a month.
...The end result of all this:
-The GF grill doesn't do too bad a job. Need to get some seasoning for the rest of the pork chops, though.
-With a little sauce on it, the macaroni's not too bad either.
I think this'll work for now.
