The project I've been working on is a Shrine Visit mini-episode featuring Hitori Uzune. I'd always felt rather sad for, and sympathetic towards, him, so I started this, setting it in an AU where Operation Hatoful was cancelled some time after Nageki was brought to the St. Pigeonation's Medical Center.

I basically wanted to give one of my favorite characters something closer to a happy ending...

And then the revelation at the end of Chapter 4 hit that completely altered my perception of Hitori. I thought that "Kazuaki Nanaki" was just a pseudonym he created for himself to hide his identity and separate himself from his past...but now we know the truth: Kazuaki was a suicidally depressed bird that Hitori tricked into dying so that he could steal his identity and create a false self, turning him into nothing more than a pawn in his plan

He figuratively and literally stole Kazuaki's life.

Now I find myself rather hating Hitori...hence why the project's in limbo: I don't know if I want to give him that happier ending anymore.

Aren't the shrine scenes all AU anyway? Like, Nageki apparently wasn't dead and was still living with Hitori in his, right? Maybe we should wait until we do Kazuaki's just to make sure he doesn't already have a canonical version of that exact premise anyway.

Though if it makes you feel any better, bear in mind that Hitori killed Kazuaki becaause Nageki's death caused Hitori to A) go completely unhinged from grief, B) have an intense desire to infiltrate and get closer to Isa for the sake of revenge, and C) suddenly find himself wanted by the Hawk Party and therefore in need of a new identity anyway. If Operation Hatoful hadn't gone through and if Nageki hadn't died, then none of that would have happened, and it's at least not unreasonable to believe that Kazuaki would still be alive.

When you said your perception had been altered I knew it would be Hitori! Do I play any characters who don't suddenly turn out to have killed everyone?
