On my way back from the recycling center, I spot a building I hadn't noticed before...one with an unexpected symbol on it: the Pokemon Gym symbol. Bwuh? I could've sworn Alola didn't have Gyms. I walk in, and a Dancer greets me in the same manner a Drill Sergeant would.
"Ten-hut! Welcome, Kantonian in the making!" In the making? Bitch I moved here from Kanto. Anyway, they offer to let me challenge the Gym for 1000P. I am sorely tempted to just Hydro Vortex the whole building and be done with how much of an insult to the memory of a Gym this place is. The music is goofy, the room is just a bunch of people standing around what I can only assume are trash cans, and did I mention the music is cornier than Iowa farmland?
Whatever. 1000P to wipe this smear off my memory will be worth did she just hand me a Soda Pop?
Anyway, a quick check of the things I thought were trash cans reveals them to be, yup, trash cans. I figure I'll start by taking out the old guy with the Oranguru in the corner...except he's here for the "authentic Kanto Gym experience" himself. A victim of a tourist trap...okay, you're spared. The Beauties dotting the landscape appear to be the "sub-trainers" of the "Gym" anyway. First up,BeautyKantonian Gym Blair oh good grief they made it their NPC Trainer title?
[ROUND 1: vs Cutiefly]
Okay, the switch to Elegant Style definitely looks cooler as I give Spectra an underhand toss into battle. She looks equally cool tossing a Shadow Ball at the Cutiefly and ending this farce in one shot. A well-deserved Lv up, Spectra! :D
Blair asks if I'd like to order another drink and suddenly my opinion of the place shifts. I think what I've wandered into isn't Alola's idea of a Gym...I think I've wandered into the Pokemon World equivalent of a maid cafe.
KG Lee tells me she thinks all the trash cans give the place a mysterious feel. I think my initial hopes of them secretly being invisible wall projectors to force me to face all of the sub-trainers would have been better than a mysterious feel. (Technically I COULD just walk up to the guy in charge of the place right now and end this...but as long as I'm here, may as well get my money back!) Anyway, were we go.
[ROUND 1: vs Minccino]
...Uh-oh. Was this adorable bit of fluff Electric-type or Normal-type? ...Okay, the Shadow Ball whiff proves it's Normal. Spectra would have issues with that if I hadn't taught her Infestation. This'll do some decent damage over time while Hypnosis keeps it from doing anything other than getting bugged in its sleep. The fact that the move also does some damage on use is even better, but I think I'm gonna swap Obsidian in for some extra Exp before Infestation finishes the job...oh, it didn't? Here, lemme help with those bugs by crushing them with a Rock Slide! One finished fight later and KG Lee says I'll be "the Kantonian" in no time at this rate.
...Lady, I already said it, I am a Kantonian. Sheesh. Anyway, up next is KG Adrian. Yeah, I figured you were one of the sub-trainers here, ma'am.
[ROUND 1: vs Smoochum]
...Okay, what was the idea behind this Gym, Cute-type? Spectra, Shadow Ball it and let's go. *KERPOOF!* Okay, retracting my maid cafe comment from earlier, this place is just a poor copy of a Gym.
Next I'll take on the two guys talking in the corner...oh, they're actually just talking. "I hear it's a perfect re-creation of a famous Gym in Vermillion City!" ... ... ...y'know, actually, now that I think about it, this does look a lot like Lt. Surge's Gym.
The lack of Electric-types just makes it all the more appalling and disgraceful. Maybe the Veteran wants to battle? ...Nope, he's just a regular here. Guess I just have to take out the last Beauty/Kantonian Gym, Dallas.
...Wait. Blair, Adrian, Lee, Dallas?
I'm taking on 4 Beauties who, in RWBY terms, would be Team BALD?
brblaughingforever
[ROUND 1: vs Fomantis]
Okay I'm good. Poor little Fomantis isn't, however. Infestation takes it out in 2 turns. And no, Dallas, you most certainly are not the first Trainer I beat here. In fact, aside from the "Gym Leader," you're the last.
I swap Serana to the lead before taking on the "Gym Leader." I can only imagine how much of a hoot this is going to be....oh good, it's not a Beauty, it's a Black Belt. He says he'll be my "final entertainment" for the day oh god this IS a tourist trap.
I can just imagine Viridian seething with rage at this mockery of her old home region. Well, time to take down the Kantonian Gym Leader....wait, his name is actually "Leader?" Dafuuuuuuuuuq?
[ROUND 1: vs Machoke]
...And I put a Flying-type at the front of my team. This is pure Serana-dipity. XD Well, as long as she's learned Fly, may as well use it. Helps her dodge its first Knock Off, and almost one-shots it afterwards...but then Knock Off removes her Sharp Beak AND about 75% of her HP. Alright, no more Ms. Nice Wyvern. Air Cutter FTW for a Lv up.
And, in the final travesty of this "Gym," its leader Leader, like everyone else, was using only ONE Pokemon. Even Brock had the sense to use 2. *facepalm*
"Arrrgh! My authentic, Kanto-style Pokemon!" Dude, this place was as authentic as a Sushi Bar that only served pizza. Now gimme my prize.
...The Surge Badge. You're giving me a knockoff version of the Surge Badge. Are you FUCKING kidding me. ...And an item set marked "Leader's Special." Great, he gave me a novelty Gym Badge and his lunch...10 Soda Pops and some Poke Beans. Great diet you have there, chief.
I put up with all this for 11 bottles of soda, some beans, a knock-off symbol of my childhood pride, and 3640P after entry fee. *facepalms* Why, God. Why.
...Right, moving on from that travesty. As nice as Fly was, I'm still not a fan of the 2-turn moves, so I replace it with Steel Wing. I'm supposed to be finding the bus to Route 10, but I seem to have taken a wrong turn and wound up on Route 11. Well, as long as I'm here, let's see what kind of 'mons hide in the grass, shall we? Right off the bat I trip over a Komala. Ooo, new entry! :D Steel Wing and Leech Life soften it up a bit, so let's see if a Dusk Ball can--
*PHWEEEeeew!* Holy crap, my first Critical Catch of the game. O_O
To those not familiar: when you get the Pokedex filled up to a certain point, you start getting the ability to essentially score critical hits with a Poke Ball. When you throw one to catch something, it will make a whistling sound while going through the air, then make one big wobble before either popping open or snapping shut to confirm the catch. This boosts the ability to catch a Pokemon immensely, and is the main reason why having a mostly filled-out Pokedex is helpful for catching Legendaries.
As I move on to check out what else is here, Rotom auto-fires up the Prize Money Booster from the Roto Lotto. Guess I may as well take some Trainers on, then. We'll start with Alyssa and Sho, the Athletic Siblings.
[ROUND 1: vs Lilligant & Whimsicott]
Oh this is gonna be a massacre. Serenity's Icy Wind almost one-shots the pair, and Air Cutter finishes the job. Yep, it was a massacre alright. Serenity hits Lv 38 out of it and tries to learn Hyper Voice. It's immensely more powerful than all her other moves save for Sparkling Aria, but I don't want to part with any of them; Icy Wind just proved its worth and is my only Ice-type move, Disarming Voice is my only Fairy-type move, and Encore has proven effective too often.
Sorry, no Hyper Voice for you my dear. ;_; The victory nets us 4,704P, though, so...good job Rotodex? A short ways to the right nets the TM for Gyro Ball, a Steel-type move that does more damage the slower the user is. Excellent. Now to find another trainer before the Roto-Power runs out. Ah, perfect, a kid with a Dedenne! Let's go, Hayden!
[ROUND 1: vs Hayden's Dedenne...try saying THAT five times fast.]
Each gen had a Mockachu that tried to cash in on Pikachu's utter cuteness. Dedenne was one of these...and honestly I think it pulls it off. Such a cute lil mouse...let's squash it! Psychic does a bit, then it Thunder Waves Serana to paralyze her. Rude, kid. Rude. It follows up the next two rounds with Volt Switch, which are shrugged off with Leech Life before I decide it's not shrugging them off enough and tag out for Obsidian, who promptly dodges a 3rd Volt Switch before finishing things with Fire Fang. Serana hits 37, while Erinys and Gauss hit 36. Cool. You're right kid, Dedenne is nuzzle-able for certain, but you picked a fight. This is what happens when you pick a fight.
I swap Erinys up to the front to try and find 1 more Trainer before the Roto-Power runs out...and it runs out as soon as I exit the menu. Dang. I move along anyway and run into Black Belt Alvaro, who asks his "master" to lend him its strength in a battle. Said "master" is a Bewear, Stufful's evolved form and good grief that thing grows up when it evolves.
[ROUND 1: vs Bewear]
Well, let's see how Erinys does. First, Toxic to soften it up, and then GOOD LORD THAT TAKE DOWN ALMOST KILLED HER. Okay, tagging out. This thing likes Normal- and Fighting-type moves, eh? Spectra, you're up! Sure enough, Take Down #2 hits dead air. Shadow Ball won't do anything, but Infestation will add onto the turn-by-turn damage...oh crap this thing knows Brutal Swing. Spectra's at 3 HP. Right, time for some solid steel defense. Gauss dodges a Brutal Swing and watches Bewear almost keel over from Toxic before finishing the job with Flash Cannon.
Whew! That's the kind of challenge I like. Good job team! Spectra reaches 37 out of it and Alvaro cries out for his fallen master...and then gives me the TM for Payback. Sweet! :D :D :D Afterward Rotodex suggests I check my bag for healing items...oh, you mean like the 170+ Sitrus Berries I somehow have stuffed in here?
That reminds me that I need to check Poke Pelago. Between that and how late it is, I'm gonna sign off here. Later!
